Welcome to the Massasuaga web site
Greetings from the members of the Eastern Massasauga Recovery Team! I would
like to thank you for taking a moment to learn more about the Eastern
Massasauga Rattlesnake.
The Recovery Team is a group of government and non-government agencies
working together to share expertise in effort to ensure the long-term
viability of this species-at-risk as an important cornerstone of Canada's
biodiversity. The team comprises of representation from the four
sub-populations in Ontario plus some specifically addressing outreach and
education. Much of the work revolves around helping people better
understand and appreciate this species including identification, safety,
coexistence, and stewardship.
Types of projects the Team has contributed to include:
Road mortality mitigation work throughout Eastern Georgian Bay
Eastern Massasauga Stewardship Guide (found on this website)
A massasauga display at the Toronto Zoo
Guidelines for mapping habitat and conducting searches delivered to
development planners
Monitoring population studies on the Bruce Peninsula
Consideration of massasaugas in bog restoration at Wainfleet
Significant outreach efforts throughout the four ranges
We hope you find this website and other work of the team both educational
and useful. Together we are already seeing a difference in people's
attitudes and hopefully one day the status of the snake.
Sincerely,
Andrew Promaine
