Welcome to the Easten Massasauga website
Greetings from Georgian Bay! I would like to thank you for taking a moment to learn more about the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. With your help, we know that we can ensure the long-term viability of this threatened species as an important cornerstone of Canada's biodiversity. The Recovery Team is here to help facilitate this goal.
As a team, we bring forward the best available information to help make the best decisions on behalf of the massasauga. Recent projects include:
- Road mortality mitigation work throughout Eastern Georgian Bay
- A repatriation study at Ojibway Prairie Reserve in Windsor, including an "Adopt a Snake" program.
- A new massasauga display at the Toronto Zoo
- Guidelines for mapping habitat and conducting searches delivered to development planners
- Monitoring population studies on the Bruce Peninsula
- Consideration of massasaugas in bog restoration at Wainfleet
- Significant outreach efforts throughout the four ranges
- Predictive modeling of critical habitat
The EMR is identified under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA) with the process of ensuring a SARA compliant Recovery Strategy taking place 2007-2008.
We hope you find this website and other work of the team both educational and useful. Together we are already seeing a difference in people's attitudes and hopefully one day the status of the snake.
Sincerely,
Andrew Promaine
